Dr. M. Jamal Deen visits DLSU and BME research team

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Dr. Mohamed Jamal Deen, President of Academy of Science and a visiting professor from McMaster University graced the De La Salle University with his presence last March 16, 2016.

The AGAPAY project was pitched during a meeting that was presided upon Dr. Deen’s arrival. The panel included members of the AGAPAY Team headed by by Dr. Nilo Bugtai, Dr. M. Jamal Deen, Dr. Raymond Girard Tan, the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation (VCRI), Dr. Feorillo Petronilo Demetrio III, Director of University Research and Coordination Office (URCO), Dr. Jonathan Dungca, the Dean of Gokongwei College of Engineering, Ms. Merlita Opeña, the Division Chief of Philippines Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), and Ms. Joana Angostora.

Some of concepts Dr. Deen introduced were non-invasive. There was the Smart Medical Home, where transferring the elderly to home for the elderlies will no longer be necessary. Monitoring will be done through a remote medical facility connected to the doctors. The project also developed different technologies customized by needs such as Smart Sleeping which helps people go into a deep sleep state, embedded LEDs with sensors on the floor which automatically light up as you pass, Smart Living Diary that monitors sleep, improve lifestyle and recommends proper nutrition and diet, and Smart Home Server which encompasses security, environmental condition, health and improve well-being.

Plans for having the Philippines Biomedical Engineering Conference that started way back 2007 were brought up by Dr. Bugtai for further discussions.

Suggestions on having multi-disciplinary projects in the university composing students with different backgrounds and courses were raised in order to eliminate social barriers. Joining competitions after a particular project were highly encouraged. A team will be supervised by one (1) faculty but on the other hand, students can have more than one resource professors working with them for the project. There must be an agreement upon all the professors involved. Communication is the key learning in the collaboration.
